About Sam

Prior to entering the psychotherapy field, I spent five years working in a child advocacy centre where I worked frontline in supporting young people and families who have been affected by child abuse. I had the honour of holding the heavy and emotional stories that our clients came in with and walking alongside them as they navigated the beginning of their healing. In addition to seeing how powerful their emotions were, I also saw how powerful people were in responding to them. And it is because of this work that I went on to complete my Master of Counselling Degree with City University of Seattle.

Since beginning in the field of psychotherapy, I have taken trainings in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) and theraplay which lend well to the treatment of trauma and I am certified as a Clinical Trauma Professional. I am also a certified Grief Recovery specialist and I have begun exploring the field of existentialism to complement any discussions my clients wish to have about finding purpose or meaning after losses. In addition, I have training in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to support those looking to better regulate their emotions and behaviours. Finally, I am certified as a perinatal mental health care provider to better support pregnant and postpartum people with the significant transitions they are dealing with.

Because of all of this, I find that I work very well with those who have experienced abuse/trauma at any point in life and those that are suffering from grief and loss (including bereavement, the ending of relationships, or more abstract concepts such as a loss of safety or loss of self). My practice tends to focus on supporting first responders, those with trauma histories, or pregnant/postpartum individuals however, I am open to consulting with you to determine if I am a fit for your current needs and goals.

In addition to my clinical practice, a significant chunk of my time is devoted to researching, developing, and sharing mental health information with the public. I have taught for Alberta Health Services in the past on a variety of topics pertaining to mental health and I currently have webinars available online through the Institute of Child Psychology. I am also a faculty member at City University of Seattle. I truly believe that knowledge is power and I take great pride in being able to share the knowledge that I have learned in my own journey.

Certifications:

Certified Grief Recovery Specialist

Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional (PMH-C)

Certified Clinical Trauma Professional - Level 2 (CCTP-II)

Quick Facts
Quick Facts

What is your fee for individual therapy?

As recommended by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta, my rate for a 50-minute session is $220. I do offer limited sliding scale spots and you are welcome to inquire regarding such.

What is your cancellation policy?

Because others are also in need of sessions, I do my best to ensure that all available spots are offered to clients in need. Therefore, I ask that 24 hours’ notice be given if you are going to miss or reschedule a session.

Do you offer direct billing?

Yes! I am currently set up to offer direct billing through Alberta Blue Cross, Medavie Blue Cross, and Telus eClaims (which includes insurers such as Desjardins, Canada Life, Union Benefits, etc.) I am also a member of the Edmonton Police Preferred Provider Network can can direct bill for EPS members.

Is there parking on site/is your building accessible?

Yes! Client parking is available at the front of the building for no charge and the office is wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Do you offer online or in-person counselling?

Both!

What is your speciality?

While I have training in working with numerous issues and a wide variety of ages, I have developed a niche for working with first responders, those with trauma histories, and pregnant or postpartum individuals (including non birthing parents). At this time, my focus is more on working with adults than children and youth.

What else do I need to know about you?

I tend to be a bit more directive in my therapeutic approach so while I believe I am warm and comforting, I also like to have a plan of action in place. I also truly pride myself on authenticity so you will always be getting an honest and real version of me. I tend to kick my shoes off when I feel like I need to really focus and you will often see me with a cup of tea in hand (I can’t have coffee after noon). I also really enjoy research and reading and will happily rattle off “fun facts” whenever one pops in mind.

Land Acknowledgement

As settlers on this land, Dover Psychology and Consulting respectfully acknowledges that we are located in Treaty 6 territory and within the lands of Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4. This land is a traditional gathering place for many Indigenous peoples including the Cree, Blackfoot, Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), Dene, Nakota Sioux, and Métis.

The land, culture, language, traditions, and spirit of all First Peoples in this area have been harmed and disregarded for a very long time, and the field of psychotherapy is not innocent in these actions. For too long there has been a monopoly of the idea of healing and “normalcy” which has discounted the vast wisdom inherently present in Indigenous communities. There is much to learn from these communities and this will require honesty, humility, openness to learning, and ownership of our mistakes.

Dover Psychology would like to thank the Indigenous peoples for protecting this land and enriching this society with their teachings. In turn, we are committed to continuously respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and to allow it to inform our ongoing practice. We commit to being self-reflective and accountable for our actions. We commit to ongoing learning and a desire to support the agency and wisdom of our Indigenous communities. Our hope is that we continue to do our part to understand and move closer to reconciliation.
